Improving ONJ prevention
What is the SToP ONJ initiative?
The SToP ONJ initiative aims to develop and validate innovative and smarter tools for preventing osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ).
ONJ is a rare complication of bone modifying agents, including bisphosphonates or denosumab. While it only occurs in a small minority of patients, ONJ can have an important impact on the quality of life of patients and the treatment options are limited.
Prevention strategies can reduce the risk of ONJ, but may benefit from novel approaches.

What are bone modifying agents (BMA)?
BMAs are drugs that are used to treat diseases that cause excessive bone turnover. This means that bone is removed faster than that new bone can be created, which can lead to fractures.
Bisphosphonates and denosumab are commonly used BMAs.
Typical conditions treated with BMAs include osteoporosis, Paget's disease, and cancer that has spread to the bone.
Why is ONJ prevention important?
While ONJ occurs only in a minority of patients treated with BMAs, it can have an important impact on their quality of life.
The treatment options for ONJ are currently still limited. Therefore preventing ONJ from occurring is very important!
The SToP ONJ initiative is currently studying novel ways of improving ONJ prevention.
